Ozone is one of the strongest oxidizers available, able to disinfect and sanitize water very effectively. Ozone water treatment systems require more than just an ozone generator, however – they may need oxygen concentrators, air dryers, ozone injectors, contact tanks, and more. The best ozone water systems for your business will depend on your specific needs. Let the ozone engineers at US Water Systems help you determine which packaged systems is right for you.

Because all of our packaged ozone systems are a little different, depending on their capacity and purpose, not every system will include all of the following parts. These are the main elements of most ozone water systems, however, and they may be included in one or more packages.

Ozone Generators

The central part of all ozone water systems is the ozone generator. Generators will vary in size based on how they produce the ozone, the concentration they can produce, and the flow rate, among other factors. Many small, wall-mounted systems are available that are ideal for treating water in pools, water vending machines, small aquariums, and other applications that don’t require a very high concentration or a fast flow rate.

Larger businesses and those that rely on a steady supply of clean, disinfected water may need a larger generator. Typically, larger systems are skid mounted or pre-assembled on a mobile platform that can easily be put into place where needed. These ozone water systems are ideal for commercial laundries, wineries, and food processing plants, among other businesses.

Ozone generators usually create ozone in one of two ways: with ultraviolet (UV) light or through the corona discharge method. The UV methods works basically the same way that ozone is created in the Earth’s atmosphere. When oxygen (O2) passes through the UV light, the molecules are split apart and reform as ozone (O3). UV ozone generators tend to less expensive than other types, but they typically cannot create the high concentrations of ozone required by larger systems.

The second way that ozone can be generated is via the corona discharge method. In this type of system, the oxygen is exposed to an electrical discharge (called a “corona”), which splits the molecules. Many people notice the distinctive smell after a bolt of lightning, which creates ozone in the same way.

Oxygen Concentrators

While most ozone systems can create ozone from the ambient air, adding an oxygen concentrator before the generator can help increase the production. The air around us has an oxygen concentration of only about 21%. This means that there is a limited amount of O2 for the ozone generator to turn into O3. An oxygen concentrator essentially cleans the air, separating out the oxygen and providing a concentration of higher than 90%.

Air Dryers

Another device that you might use before your ozone generator is an air dryer. When the air is humid, ozone production is less efficient and the system is more likely to produce byproducts like nitric acid. Lowering the humidity with an air dryer with increase ozone production. Some smaller ozone systems have an air dryer built in, so an additional device is not needed.

Ozone Injectors

Another important part of ozone water systems is the injector, which is how the ozone gets into the water. Water is forced through the conical body of the injector manifold, and a vacuum is created due the pressure differential. This vacuum pulls the ozone bubbles into the water.

Ozone can also be injected into the water using a diffuser. In this method, the diffuser typically rests at the bottom of a contact tank. The ozone is pumped into the tank through the diffuser, which releases the bubbles into the water.

Other Accessories

Depending on the ozone water treatment systems that you are considering, packaged systems may also include check valves, backflow preventers, contact tanks, booster pumps, and other accessories.
