Compare US Water Systems To Aquasana

Q.  [Can you compare] prices for a whole home carbon filter and water softer and the specs? We are about to buy the AquaSauna 1,000,000 gal carbon filter and their saltless softer but I want to compare it to others and their prices too. Thanks — Deanna

A.  It’s impossible for me to compare our systems to Aquasana salt-free water softeners and their carbon filters for a few reasons:

  1. We do not have a “salt-free water softener;”
  2. What Aquasana calls  a “salt-free softener” does not soften the water;
  3. We do not have a whole house carbon filter with as small amount of carbon in it as Aquasana; and
  4. We do not have cartridge filters as small as theirs.

On January 13, 2018, we published  A Real Case Study: Aquasana Rhino Salt-Free Softener This is about a homeowner who purchased an Aquasana Rhino and salt-free water softener.  After it was installed, he tested the water and discovered it was not “soft.”  He contacted Aquasana and was told “that while it is called a softener, it really doesn’t ‘soften’ the water, it just helps prevent scale”.  Then why call it a “softener” if it doesn’t “soften” the water?  In his case, he would not have bought it if they had not called it a “softener.”  That is precisely why they call it that – to sell a product that people would not buy, if they did not think it would “soften” the water!

So, you asked me about Aquasana’s Salt-Free Softener and the answer is THEY DON’T HAVE ONE!  Yes, they say that do, so here’s what I will do:  Buy the Aquasana and if the water tests soft in a laboratory, I will give you $1,000.00 dollars, but if it’s not soft, you owe me $1,000.00.  Don’t take that bet – You will loose every time! So, if Aquasana says they have a salt-free water softener, is that true?  NO, IT IS NOT! If it’s not true, what else is not true?

Carbon filters are one of the best ways to remove chlorine, chloramine, chemicals and pesticides from the water, but in order to do so, it takes “prolonged contact” with the carbon… and the more carbon, the better! This is where Aquasana falls short again.  Our tanks are much bigger and therefore, contain dramatically more carbon – usually double or even triple the amount!  Nowhere in their literature or manuals can you find how much carbon they put in their systems, but since their tanks are dramatically smaller than ours, even a 3rd-grader can see they have much less carbon. By the way, it’s easy for you to find out how much carbon is in our tanks.  It is on the web page and in the manuals. We disclose it.  They do not!

Another issue:  Their cartridge filters are 2-1/2″ x 10″ or 2-1/2″ x 20.”  We call those filters “point-of-use” filters (like for a sink), not whole house filters.  Our whole house cartridge filters are 4-1/2″ x 10″ or 4-1/2″ x 20″ filters designed for high flow rates. Aquasana also uses “string” filters which have been around since dinosaurs.  We use pleated polyester which filters dramatically better.  Some people say “I like string filters – I don’t have to change them very much.” Yeah, they don’t have to change them because they don’t filter very well.  Using a string filter to filter sediment is like using a screen door to stop wind!

US Water takes  “Modular Approach” to water treatment and unlike Aquasana, uses ALL AMERICAN MADE Filters and Housings.  We start with our Pulsar Bodyguard System which removes Sand, Silt, and Sediment, offering the highest level of protection of any pre-filter to your family.  It also removes chemical contaminants like Chlorine, Chloramine, Pesticides, THM, TCE, PCB, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, VOC’s, industrial solvents, and hundreds of other contaminants.

With our Pulsar system, you can add “Modules” to remove Fluoride, Bacteria, Virus, Cysts and Modules to prevent Limescale, but we do not sell a salt-free “WATER SOFTENER”and neither does Aquasana.  You can find that in the Fantasy Store aisle, right beside Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny!

  1. YOU CAN’T DRINK THE WATER IF THERE IS SALT IN IT!!! DO NOT PURCHASE A SALT WATER SOFTENER!!!

  2. If the softener doesn’t soften water but removes scale, isn’t that a good thing?
    What would you recommend for whole house system 3500 sq ft house?
    Thanks, jamie
