I am very confused about whole-house water softener systems—sodium vs. potassium chloride—what capacity do I need—-should it only be hooked up to the hot water heater—will the sodium damage outside plants? I could go on and on. Every time I think I have found a reliable product, I find a lot of reviews describing a terrible experience with that product. We are remodeling a bathroom and we want to stop the calcium build-up on our fixtures and prevent stains in the toilets and on the shower curtains. Our water is moderately hard—124 mg/liter. We have 3 people living at the house (3.5 bathrooms). We have 2 hot water heaters, one for the house and one for the garage apartment. Your product seems very attractive but the absence of a track record makes me wary. Do you have any reviews? Also, we are not do-it-yourselfers. Does anyone sell and install your product in Houston, TX. I would appreciate any advice you could give me. Thank you.

    Here’s a few things to consider:

    1. Potassium chloride is up to 5 times higher in cost than sodium, so I would not even consider it die to the cost/
    2. A reverse osmosis system removes the sodium and up to 40,000 other chemicals and contaminants for drinking and house plants.
    3. Most softeners have a bypass valve so that you can use hard water for major watering outside.
    4. In my case, I have my house plumbed so that I have hard water to the outside hydrants.
    5. Softening just the hot water is like putting one foot in ice water and the other in boiling water – just not very satisfying!
    6. Softening just the hot water leaves you with hard water in the shower and washer – a bad idea!

  3. All of this is still unclear whether calcium is removed or remains in a “softer” form. What does REMOVE Calcium? My intention is to pretreat sea water for RO delalination, Hardness is not my priority, Salt removal is my priority. Intake water is direct sea water around a limestone based island in the Caribbean. Salt and calcium far exceed any other contaminants. We use the traditional sediment filters to 5 microns for feed water. I bought a used system which had a common water softener included, I question the good it does, but Im not an expert. We need desalinated water first for concrete construction, secondarily for potable water through another second stage, using the product water from the desalinator. I am currently relocating this system and trying to upgrade in the process. Whatever input you could provide would be appreciated.

  4. Calcium is removed by ion exchange or reverse osmosis, but if you remove it with reverse osmosis it will “scale” the membrane quickly, rendering it useless. If you are talking “sea water” it takes special sea water membranes which are designed for water up to 40,000 ppm of TDS.

    My no nonsense factual approach leads me to ask exactly what you are trying to do, because what you are talking about has “disaster” written all over it. You know just enough to be very dangerous. I say that with all due respect. Please e-mail or call me at or 800-608-8792.

  5. So what is the efficiency of the softener? I am looking for something in the range of 3.333 to 5,000 grains per pound of salt.

  6. If you want efficiency between 3,333 to 5,000 grains per pound of salt, then that narrows down the list to every softener on the market! Everyone has access to the same resin, salt and frankly, any softener can deliver those efficiences… ONE TIME! That is how these systems are tested: ONE TIME! However, ours can deliver those efficiencies in the real world, day-after-day, due to our upflow brining and proportional brining (uses the exact amount of salt needed to bring the bed back to a full charge). Ours, and all other can be set to any efficiency. No magic here – just solid science. Ours is significantly more efficient on saving water, as it can skip ever othery backwash or 10 (whatever you set it at). On city water, it is usually not necessary that a softener backwash every time.
