The GE Merlin reverse osmosis system works like a small commercial RO system. It uses two membrane elements in series to produce the high flow of permeate. The concentrate from element one is channeled into the inlet at the second element as shown by the flow pattern figure below.
The GE Merlin RO stops the flow of inlet water when the system is not in use. An internal shut-off valve will close when pressure in the permeate, (RO), line reaches approximately 44% of the system inlet pressure. This function saves water by turning the unit off when permeate water is not being used. The inlet valve will open, and the Merlin RO will start making permeate water when pressure in the permeate line drops to approximately 11% of the system inlet pressure.
NOTE: For best water quality, add the "FLUSH TANK" which rinses the membrane with high quality RO water after the MERLIN shuts off. This prevents "TDS creep" and delivers dramatically better water.
NOTE: As wonderful as a "tankless" reverse osmosis system sounds, the GE Merlin RO System is not for everyone. In fact, the GE Merlin may not be the product that you need. Before you purchase a GE Merlin RO, we encourage you to talk to one of our product application specialists to determine if it is right for you. Call us at 800-608-USWATER to find out. I need 300 to 400 gallons of water three times a week and the GE Merlin meets this demand easily. I would recommend using a couple of the 4.5 x 20 prefilters (I learned the hard way, by burning through membranes) before the Merlin. I would give it 5 stars, but the shut-off valve doesn't always work, so I just shut off the inlet - no big deal.
