Product Description

US WATER WaterMaster Filox™ Backwashing Filter with CK10 Valve

FILOX™ MEDIA FOR IRON, HYDROGEN SULFIDE, MANGANESE REMOVAL.  Filox™ is used for removing iron, hydrogen sulfide, and manganese from water supplies. It is a media that utilizes an oxidation-reduction reaction and filtration process similar to Greensand, but at a much higher level of performance. Filox-R™ contains 80% manganese dioxide in an extremely unique cluster format for enhanced performance and maximized capacity. Filox™ out performs Greensand, Brim, etc. due to the purity of its particles, superior oxidation/filtration capacity, and durability.

Iron is one of the most common elements found in nature, and most ground waters contain a measurable amount of iron.  Iron stains bathtubs, toilets, sinks, driveways and it will even stain the side of your house in sufficient concentrations.  The Filox™ backwashing filter is a non-chemical oxidizing media to reduce iron.

Filox™ System Advantages
  • Highest flow rate of any iron removal media - Because of its superior performance potential, Filox supports a significantly higher service flow rate per bed size and can be used in smaller filters than Birm and Greensand. An 9" diameter Filox filter actually exceeds the service flow capacity of a 12" diameter Birm or Greensand filter.
  • No oxidizing chemicals needed for regeneration
  • High efficiency with 80% manganese dioxide for enhanced performance and capacity - Filox (often called Pyrolox) is superior to most other oxidizing medias because of its very high manganese dioxide content. Manganese dioxide is the active ingredient of all leading iron/manganese reduction systems. Filox consists of 80% manganese dioxide.  Manganese Greensand is 3% and Birm is 1% manganese dioxide. The high manganese dioxide content produces a much more active and kinetic media, and is therefore, a much more effective product.
  • Effective from 5.0 to 9.0 pH - Filox operates within a much broader pH range than most iron-reduction media. It can be used to treat waters that are significantly lower in pH than Birm. Unlike Birm, Filox is chlorine tolerant. In fact, it works well with all the standard oxidizing agents (chlorine, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, air).
  • System is easy to program -  10 pre-programmed regeneration cycles to optimize water treatment
  • Filox has an expected lifespan that is 7500 times that of Birm  (Greensand can be expected to last 50 times as long as Birm.) Filox also has superior particle strength which makes it hold up better than other media during the frequent backwashing required of iron filters.
  • Higher Capacity for Iron, Manganese and Sulfur - Filox alone, without additional oxidizers, under the right conditions, a cucic foot is capable of handling up to 15 ppm (parts per million) iron, 7 ppm hydrogen sulfide, and 3 ppm manganese. Capacity increases greatly with the use of oxidizers as pretreatment.
  • CK10 Valve Backwashes Filox effectively - Easy to program, solid-state, 5-year warranty
  • Advanced Vortech Tank requires less backwash water and effectively regenerates Filox - much better than a standard distributor - 10-year tank warranty
  • Includes Everything - Media, Connectors and Bypass Valve

You can buy a Filox filter from some other company, but if it doesn't have the VORTECH tank, it's not even close to US Water's Filox Filter.

  • The VORTECH tank eliminates the "cone distributor" at the bottom of the tank, resulting in better flow rates, eliminating of channeling and less regeneration water usage.
  • It dramatically reduces pressure drop by up to 40% Filox works very well with aeration and with chlorination. Both keep the media fresh and assure complete oxidation of iron and sulfide.
  • Unlike Birm, which cannot be used with chlorine, Filox is chlorine tolerant. Since Filox has a much wider window of pH acceptability (5.0 to 9.0, as compared with 6.8 and up for Birm), using Filox often makes it unnecessary to add pH aadjustment to the iron removal system.
  • The wider pH range also makes it much easier to predict success from an iron filter when the pH is in the mid-6 range.
  • The life expectancy of Filox is essentially unlimited (except in extreme iron conditions); Birm filters are commonly rebedded every two or three years.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Filox?

  • Filox is very heavy. It weighs so much that it can only be packed in half cubic foot (57 lbs.) bags.
  • For UPS shipping, Filox requires special boxing. Birm weighs less than half as much. Filter carbon, by contrast, weighs about 1/4 as much as Filox.
  • Compared with Birm and Greensand, Filox is very expensive.
  • Filox requires more frequent backwashing under higher flow rates than most iron removal media, except in very light-duty situations - daily backwashing is preferred. Therefore, it uses more water and requires more wastewater disposal.
